  • What is a Venn diagram?

A Venn diagram is a way to illustrate all the elements within sets and any intersections.

  • Define the term set.

A set is a collection of elements.

  • What symbol is the empty set represented by?

represents the empty set (the set with no elements).

  • Define the term subset.

A subset is a set within another set, i.e. every element of set A is also in set B, A ⊆ B.

  • How is the number of elements in a set A represented?

n(A) represents the number of elements in set A.

  • Define the term union.

The union of a group of sets is all of the elements in all of the sets in that group.

For example, the union of set A and set B, A ∪ B, is all elements in A or B or both.

  • Which region represents A' on a Venn diagram?

    A' means not A.

The regions not in the A circle (everything outside A) represent A'.

  • Define the term intersection.

The intersection of two or more sets is the group of elements that appear in all of the sets specified.

For example, the intersection of set A and set B, A ∩ B, is all of the elements in both A and B.

  • How are the elements of a set represented?

    The elements are written inside curly brackets {}, e.g. A = {1, 2, 3}.

  • True or False?

The universal set is represented by the rectangle in a Venn diagram.

    True.

The universal set is represented by the rectangle in a Venn diagram.

  • Define .

is the universal set (the set of everything).

  • What does a ∈ A mean?

a ∈ A means a is an element of A (a is in the set A, or a is a member of the set A).

  • True or False?

A Venn diagram can only represent two sets at a time.

    False.

A Venn diagram can represent more than two sets using multiple overlapping circles.
