Definitions of Goal Types

  • Performers may set their own goals, or goals may be set by a sports coach or teacher

  • Goals are important for the purposes of:

    • Motivation

    • Progress tracking

Performance goals

  • Performance goals can be defined as follows:

A goal relating to individual performance without comparison to others

  • A performance goal might involve:

    • Improving on a prior performance

    • Perfecting a particular technique

  • Examples include:

    • Improving on a 100 m sprint time

    • Scoring a higher level on a fitness test

    • Improving a first serve percentage in tennis

Outcome goals

  • Outcome goals can be defined as follows:

A goal relating to an end result that involves comparison with others

  • An outcome goal might be concerned with:

    • Winning a match or tournament

    • Being selected for a team

    • Scoring a certain number of points

  • Examples include:

    • Winning a tennis tournament

    • Scoring a try in a rugby match

    • Being selected to play hockey at county level

    • Winning an Olympic gold medal
