The Consequences of a Sedentary Lifestyle

  • People who do not participate in any physical activity live a sedentary lifestyle

    • A person who is sedentary is inactive

    • Lifestyle is the way a person lives day to day - their typical behaviour

    • For example, a person who spends every day switching between working at a desk, sitting on a sofa, to lying in bed would live a sedentary lifestyle

  • It can be difficult, particularly for adults, to access opportunities to carry out physical activities and sports

    • According to a report by Sports England, in 2021/22 around 11.9 million adults in England were inactive (carrying out less than 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a week)

  • People who exist in this way run the risk of many physical and mental health issues as a result of this

  • Some of these include:

    • Weight gain/obesity

    • Heart disease

    • Hypertension

    • Type II diabetes

    • Poor sleep

    • Poor self-esteem

    • Lethargy

Exam Tip

Try not to get confused between Type I and Type II diabetes. Type I is not influenced/caused by lifestyle factors.
