Properties of Metals

  • Different metals have different properties and this will influence how they are used
  • For example, aluminium has a low density, is a good conductor and is strong, so makes it ideal to be used as overhead power cables

Properties and uses of common metals

Metal Property Use
Steel Hard and strong Buildings, reinforced concrete, cars, tools
Aluminium

Strong

Low density

Good conductor of heat and electricity, Resistant to corrosion

Aeroplane parts, cans, window frames, foils, overhead power cables
Copper

Very good conductor of heat and
electricity

Malleable and ductile

Attractive colour and lustre

Wiring, pipes, motors
Titanium

Hard and strong

Low density

Resistant to corrosion

High melting point

Medical industry (surgical instruments, joint replacements), spacecraft, sports equipment

Reinforced concrete block with steel rods

Steel Reinforced Concrete

Steel rods are used to reinforce concrete to increase strength in buildings

Exam Tip

Make sure you can explain why a substance is used for a particular use.

For example, copper is used in electrical wiring because it is a good conductor of electricity.
