23.1.3 Metal-Wire Strain Gauge

Metal-Wire Strain Gauge

  • A strain gauge is:

An electrical sensor whose resistance varies with applied force

  • It does this by converting the force into a change in electrical resistance
  • A metal-wire strain gauge consists of:
    • A folded thin metal wire
    • On a flexible plastic casing

Extension v Resistance of Strain Gauge

  • As the strain gauge is extended, its resistance also increases and vice versa
  • This means for tensile strain:
    • Resistance is increased
  • For compressive strain:
    • Resistance is decreased
