Biological Catalysts

  • Enzymes are protein molecules which speed up chemical reactions
  • Enzymes are therefore also classified as biological catalysts
  • The binding site (also called active site) of an enzyme is extremely specific
  • This means that only those molecules (substrates) with the exact same shape will bind to the enzyme
  • Enzymes are therefore said to be highly specific as they catalyse only specific reactions
